Perito Moreno Glacier
Even though the biting arctic wind in the Southern part of Argentina was almost too much to handle, it was well worth it to be on the catamaran's deck to experience the Perito Moreno Glacier. This photo taken in 2003 was from quite a distance. The glacier's average height is 60 m which is only the part out of the water. One of the most impressive sights I have seen was witnessing a chunk of the glacier break off and crash into the water. The noise was a cross between a train wreck, a thunder crash right outside your window and a giant redwood falling. Fortunately the boat was situated a bit away from the glacier for precisely that reason.

Tiquipaya
What used to be a remote pueblito on the outskirts of Cochabamba is now just part of the urban growing center of Cochabamba. The road to Tiquipaya used to be kilometers and kilometers of open spaces, but gradually it was all filled in by concrete, brick and mortar. Tiquipaya is quechua for "Place of the Flowers". Even though it's no longer the quiet rural village that it once was, it is still a getaway from the noise and bustle of Cochabamba.
Approaching Tiquipaya, the cholita is a recognizable landmark that was moved during the construction of the Avenue extending from Av. Simon Lopez.

Cochabamba Overpass
Right before the Municipal Elections, the new mega-project "Distribuidora de la Muyurina" was completed. This concrete and steel overpass was celebrated because it was a much needed relief from traffic congestion. Before, the traffic traveling along la Costanera (riverside), to Sacaba, towards la laguna Alalay and la Universidad Catolica Boliviana all inevitably jockeyed for position entering the traffic circle and during rush hour, this caused delays. However, the project was criticized because of its high cost and potential for corruption.

"Thanks Cochabamba for my life better during these past ten years"
Cost for the Muyurina Distribuidora: $ 6 million USD
Overcharge: $ 1 million USD
Price paid by the Cochabambinos: $ 7 million USD
Committee for the Fight Against Corruption
That phantom committee really doesn't exist, but more than likely the posters were put up by a rival campaign. Throughout the city many of the posters were "vandalized" and others were ripped down later on through the day.

There was an extensive public information campaign because some drivers were intimidated by the sheer magnitude of the structure.

In Cochabamba, not here, because my view from my room here is just a bunch of dead leaves.

El "Rio" Rocha
The word river is in quotation marks because it really doesn't look like a river. My mother used to tell me how the river used to a beautiful boundary between la Zona Norte (Cala Cala) and el Centro. In rainy season, there is more than a trickle, but in October the river bed is pretty nasty with mangy dogs looking for some grub.

Cochabamba Plaza Principal
Cochabamba's main plaza "14 de Septiembre," located in the heart of the city. The Cathedral, alcaldia, and various newspaper kiosks surround this plaza. It is also the sight of many protests, marches or assemblies; and also people escaping the strong sun under the protection of the trees.
In the middle of the square, these message boards highlight the day's current topic. Sometimes it contains newspaper clippings about Goni, the new Hydrocarbons Law, Palestine, the war in Iraq, and in the case, support for Cuba. You can also find groups of men debating about one of these topics. Sometimes, a brave teenager tries to debate these men deadset in their ways. However, I never saw a debate turn to insults, and they always were respectful (The young men always using the Ud. form)

Cristo
Yes, this is higher, but less famous than the Christ statue in Rio de Janeiro. This statue located near the Mountain of San Pedro is serviced by a cable car, steps, and a long-winding road. On the mountain, there are plans to place large letters that read "VIVA COCHABAMBA" (similar to the Hollywood sign) at the tune of $2,000 USD per letter.

Peta
Volkswagen bugs, otherwise known as "petas", are a common sight on the streets of Cochabamba. They relatively inexpensive, costing in the neighborhood of $2,000. These vehicles are simple to repair by mechanics who don't charge a whole lot. Plus, they aren't a vehicle normally targeted by robbers, who like to go after the high priced SUVs and the anonymous white taxis.

Watch Out!
This scary sign is located about 300 meters from my parents´ house in the countryside (although becoming more urban everyday). We do not know who placed the sign, but it serves as a warning for potential burglars. However, I am fascinated, yet bothered, by the depiction of the hanged man. Bolivia suffers from a phenomena of lynching as a real occurrence. That neighborhood is a mix of middle to upper class city dwellers and poor campesinos. It is a rather odd mix of neighbors who live in that area.
Added Translation: Attencion, this Neighborhood is Guarded and Armed. Suspicious Person, We Respond

The Need for the Sea
These are paintings located on the plaza principal in Tiquina on the shores of Lake Titicaca. They portray Bolivia´s longstanding feud with Chile over the loss of the sea. The statue on top of the monument is none other than Eduardo Avaroa, who is national hero for withstanding till the end.
