Starting Fresh
Outgoing Chilean President Ricardo Lagos accepted Evo Morales' invitation to attend this Sunday's inauguration. His presence will mark the first time that a Chilean President has attended the change of power in Bolivia. Recently elected Michelle Bachelet will not attend. Lagos said that he changed his mind after receiving a phone call along with a "una cariñosa invitación" from the President-elect. How's that for Anti-Chilean sentiment?
Another country that has been given a clean slate has been the United States. During his time in South Africa, Morales said that he forgave the U.S. (which didn't apologize) for past humiliations and opened the door wide open for dialogue on equal footing towards the goal of helping the Bolivian people.
"I want to say here from South Africa to the state department of the U.S. ... any dialogue that is oriented to put an end to discrimination and poverty is welcome,"
Part of the humiliations that Morales referred to was a news conference by U.S. officials that described the President-elect as a "mafioso and a narcotrafficker", which, incidentally, no connection to drug trafficking has been proven.
