Enero 22, 2006

Inauguration Notes

1:54 pm - Alvaro Garcia Linera (wearing a tie) has been sworn in as Vice-President. Evo Morales is wearing a dark suit jacket with a brown and white trim and no tie. There's a full house in Congress including several presidents (no Castro). Hugo Chavez and Alvaro Uribe are sitting side-by-side. Former presidents Carlos Mesa and Jaime Paz are also present. Right now Garcia Linera is addressing Congress.

2:05 pm - Garcia Linera reiterated that the poor and marginalized will be included in this new administration.

2:19 pm - Evo Morales has received the presidential sash. When the Vice-President placed the medallion around his neck and things were official, Morales was visibly moved. While the national anthem was played, one could not help but think what was going through his mind.

He is now addressing Congress, which included a moment of silence for many names including Tupaj Katari, Luis Espinal and Marcelo Santa Cruz. Right now he is winging his speech in typical Evo-style.

2:30 pm - Speech not going so well. He is reverting back to campaign-mode and has not been so concilatory, which had been a practice of his over this past month.
