MAS vs. El Alto

One should not confuse today's march towards La Paz as something affiliated with MAS or Evo Morales. Morales has not recently called for a full nationalization nor to expel the multinational companies. Repeatedly he has said that he wants to be partners with the oil companies, however, that Bolivians should be the owners of the gas/oil.

Some in the social movements have questioned MAS' "reformist" position. Yet, some in MAS, such as Congressman Gustavo Torrico (considered one of the more conservative MAS members) say that the push for nationalization is "suicidal".

These differences show that MAS does not have much pull in El Alto. In the municipal elections, MAS was trounced by centrist Jose Luis Paredes (PP) 52 % - 17%
