Left Behind: Bolivian Migration to Spain

Thanks to the site Open Veins, I found this worthwhile photo essay from the BBC of a community where many of its residents have left for Europe.

Photo and text from the BBC article.

Up to 30 times a week, Nurse Ana Maria Terrazas Blass announces a phone call from Spain to family left in Tablas Monte. The health centre has the only telephone in the village.

Ana says it’s been much quieter since the exodus, despite the phone calls. "Now there are only women at the community meetings," she says. "But the village is better off now because more money is coming from Spain.

This BolPress article reports that 48,000 Bolivians have completed the paperwork for regularization of their legal status.

"The Ambassador in Madrid explained that Bolivia did not have a large number of immigrants as recently as two years ago, but now it is the 5th largest group in number"
