Bolivia’s a favorite subject in the newspaper these days. However, many stories seem to be highly interchangeable with the same elements in each. Soon there will be a cookbook on how to write about Bolivia and Evo Morales.
Add 2 tbsp of “America’s Worst Nightmare”
Mix in “Close Ally of Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez”
Sprinkle “Llama Herder” on top
Add 1 cup of “Socialist”
Mix in “Radical” (optional)
Some like Oliver North, the man famous for selling weapons to Iran, should be barred from writing about Bolivia. In his recent column, he writes:
The Dec. 18 election of socialist-cocoa grower Evo Morales as president of Bolivia was hailed in the European and Latin press as a great victory for “democracy.” In fact, Mr. Morales’ political campaign closely paralleled the America-bashing tactics used so successfully by Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez.
If he cannot get something as simple as the difference between cocoa and coca, then what’s the point of giving an opinion on something so far removed from one’s reality. We have seen in different blogs, that some with more knowledge of Bolivia are able to distinguish between Evo Morales and Hugo Chavez and that it’s not a question of choosing either Chavez or choosing Lula. It’s far too easy and makes for better entertainment to lump Morales into some of the buzzwords included in the recipe.

Now Morales wants to legalize cocoa exports?! We have to act now before our vital national cocoa industry is threatened. Senators Spector and Santorum will regret turning a blind eye when Hershey Park shuts down and thousands of Pennsylvanians lose their jobs. Perhaps we can put together a coalition of the willing to invade– I think the Swiss share our strategic objectives here.

I’m sure Ollie North is worrying about the coca/cocaine coming out of Ivory Coast too.
North is an idiot. I also heard an “expert” on Fox News talk about how local Bolivian farmers produce cocaine for domestic consumption. The host didn’t correct him.
But as for the buzzwords, aren’t most of these (socialist, Castro ally, self-described “America’s worst nightmare”) true? You can’t blame the media for reporting on Morales’ rhetoric, ideology and loyalties.
